Is Gender Equality the Unexpected Bonus of the Financial Crisis Back in 2008, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy; an event that came to mark the beginning of a financial crisis. Employment rates sank, falling to levels that hadn’t been seen in decades. The future looked suddenly bleak. But ten years on, the picture is entirely different; the UK employment rate is now at 60.8%, the highest it’s been since 1974. Perhaps more interestingly, though, is the rise in the number of women in employment. A recent briefing paper from the Institute of New Economic Thinking at Oxford Martin School sheds some light on why this has happened, and what it means for the future. The Data It’s not unusual for male employment to be hardest hit when it comes to a recession. It’s a pattern that was seen in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, and it has two causes. The first is that traditionally male roles are usually hardest hit; jobs like mining and manufacturing often have to lay off significant numbers of their predominantly male workforce in a recession. And of course, the pay gap has a negative effect here. When times are hard, companies shed their highest paid workers and that means men. But while male jobs have bounced back to pre-crisis levels, it is female employment that has seen the greatest increase. 58% of the growth in employment can be accounted for by women getting jobs. That increase is shown across all age ranges but one, and that’s the 65+ range where men had the edge. So, what contributed to this surge in female employment. Why are Women Being Hired? It’s likely that women were cheaper to employ. In spite of legislation that compels employers to reveal their gender pay gap, 80% of firms still play women less, by an average of 18.4%. Being able to pay women less, makes them a more attractive proposition for hiring. And it seems that the governments offer of 30 hours free childcare has helped mothers to get back to work. Whereas the age group 25-34 (when most women who choose to start their families) had the slowest employment growth, the older age groups saw women re-joining the work force at an increasing rate. Employment Rate The Future Perhaps the most interesting age group, however was the 16-24 bracket. For the first time, there was no discernible gap in terms of employment at this age. The authors of the report stated that it was reasonable to expect that the gap will not reappear, making this the first generation to know equality in terms of employment, even if wages still need to catch up. Will this spread to other age groups? Yes, but the changes will be slower, as the age range increases. This may be a factor of cultural expectations from people in those age ranges, rather than employers making those choices. Older generations still have more firmly ingrained gender roles, and so will show change more slowly than younger people who have benefitted from the hard work of equality champions over the decades. Employment levels in the UK are now almost 61%, the highest they have been since the 1970’s. While historically, the male-favoured status quo has been returned once the crisis is over, it seems that modern Britain is ready for some change. Once you’ve reached the executive level, it’s not. Once you’re at the executive level, or are targeting those roles, you need to demonstrate value. The value you bring to a potential employer. At this level, recruiters and employers won’t be impressed that you managed a team, even a large team. That’s expected. Recruiters and hiring managers want to see the positive impact you’ve had on your current and previous employers. The impact you’ve had on your team, on your department, or across the company. To put it simply, they want examples of your accomplishments. Specifically, instances where you’ve made money, saved money, saved time, increased efficiency, cut costs, negotiated better rates, developed staff, etc. Some professions, like sales, lend themselves to quantitative results. But, with the right perspective you can come up with other ways to measure outcomes. If you work in operations, for example, you may have redesigned the method used to process expense reports so it takes only 3 days a month rather than 6. You’ve given you staff another 3 days a month to perform other duties. In other words, you cut expense report processing time 50% by redesigning the procedure. And easy way to uncover your achievements is to use the CAR (Challenge, Action, Result) formula. Sometimes referred to as the Situation, Action, Outcome formula. You may have stepped into a difficult situation when hired. Perhaps, something came up during your tenure. If you think carefully, you’ve probably overcome many obstacles. Maybe sales were down or morale was low or your department was in chaos. Once you have the challenge, the next step is to indicate how you solved the issue. If the sales team was underperforming what did you do? Steal additional staff from your competition? Develop sales training? Set up a mentor program? It’s important to go beyond the result and explain how you accomplished the feat. Finish with the result. Sales are easily quantified by talking dollar amounts or percentages. Quantifying other accomplishments can be more taxing. But, as with the example above, it can be done. Eliminate phrases like “responsible for” and “duties included” which can sabotage your resume. Instead, think in terms of Challenge, Action, Result. Yes, it will take more time and a lot more effort. But, it will be well worth it. P.S. Dont forget to establish momentum.

Don’t stress yourself out! It’s easier than you think to master  a skill and succeed in your new endeavor. Here are seven easy ways to get the hang of just about anything. 1. Prepare Yourself to Learn a New Skill It sounds crazy, but a bit of mental preparedness can go a long way when you want to learn  a new skill. For one thing, you should build yourself up with the most self-confidence you can muster. With confidence, you’ll be more likely to push through new or otherwise uncomfortable situations that may arise as you perfect your new skill. You should also be sure that you’re being realistic. Your goals should align with your natural abilities. There are always limits to what you can achieve. It’s important to make sure you have the inherent skills needed to succeed in your goals. 2. Avoid Brain Overload When you’re ready to work hard on mastering a skill, you’ll want to block out as many distractions as possible. And yes, that includes the internet. It turns out that relying on the internet to answer the questions lingering in your brain â€"  even if they’re questions related to the skill or topic you’re trying to master â€"  interrupts you when you’re deep in thought. These interruptions are especially bad when coming from the internet, because there’s so much to look at and click on. The instantaneousness of the information can ruin your focus and impede your ability to learn a new skill. In his book, Deep Work, Georgetown professor Cal Newport advises that you not look up information, even if you need it, when youre in a work cycle. After all, why would you bother remembering something if the information is available right at your fingertips? Psychologists call this transactive memory. Simply put, our motivation and capability to retain knowledge decreases when we have an external source of information that is easily accessible. When we limit those sources, we’re able to retain and master the subject. 3. Know Your Learning Style You might be far removed from a classroom experience, but you can probably remember the classes where you excelled, and the ones where your teacher’s style held you back. Did you need to sit close so that you could see and hear everything? Did you have to tackle problems yourself so that you could see first-hand how it was done? Or did you have to repeat facts over and over to make them stick? Of course, you still might need a little bit of help discerning the type of learner you are, and there are plenty of educational quizzes designed to make it clear. Once you know the answer, tailor your training methods to match your preference, whether you need illustrations, instructions or hands-on experience. 4. Block Out Your Schedule No one becomes a master of anything overnight. In fact, Malcolm Gladwell once published research indicating that, in order to become one of the “outliers” in terms of your mastery of a high-level skill, you would have to spend 10,000 hours practicing. That’s roughly 90 minutes a day for 20 years. Take a deep sigh of relief, because it’s been proven that this is not entirely true. In fact, some experts responded to the 10,000-hour claim by saying that you can actually master something in months or years, depending on a variety of factors, including your natural ability. Obviously, you can’t control that â€"  but you can control your dedication to the task. Set aside a bit of time each day to practice the skill you hope to master. Or, if it’s something you can’t practice at home â€"  imagine you want to improve your public-speaking skills in the office â€"   strive to improve your efforts each day. Someone trying to be more vocal, for example, might make a point to pipe up at least once during the first five minutes of every workplace meeting. 5. Break Down the Task Climbing a mountain in a day is a daunting task, which is why so many hikers carry along tents, food and blankets so that they can tackle it over a more reasonable stretch. Similarly, when you want to learn a new skill, you should boil down the sub-skills that your desired main skill requires and knock them off of your list one by one. That way, you’ll have benchmarks along the way to chart your progress without overwhelming yourself by feeling so far from your goal. 6. Ask an Expert There’s only so much you can learn about a skill by reading books and watching videos about it. Even when you start digging in with your own two hands, you might hit a roadblock that only an expert can help you with. There’s your answer, then: track someone down who has the skill you’re looking to master. It might be someone working in your company who’s higher up, or someone you met at a networking event or even a person you connect with on a business networking site like LinkedIn. You’ll find that most people are happy to share the informational wealth. And, in order to keep that trend going, you can pay it forward by… 7. Show Someone Else What You’ve Accomplished Once you’ve reached a certain level of mastery in your new skill, it’s time for you share it with someone else. And, while this is certainly a noble pursuit, it’ll benefit you along the way. As you explain a task or skill to someone else, you’ll hone your own understanding and therefore make yourself better at whatever it is you’ve set out to do.
